The Vodafone Ghana Foundation has handed over a computer lab to the Ofankor M/A Basic School in the Greater Accra Region to help in the teaching and learning of Information and Communication Technology (ICT).
The handing over forms part of programmes on the calendar of the Foundation to climax the 12th anniversary of its kindred projects to communities.
Mr Amaris Nana Perbi, the Lead of Vodafone Ghana Foundation, said the projects commenced last year after the Foundation solicited for entries from various staff of Vodafone to submit pressing challenges in their communities that needed interventions.
“So we had well over 20 applications and out of that we scaled them down to four and that was shortlisted by the Cross-functional Committee of Staff Volunteers and with the four that emerged, we were able to launch out in the month of February, which is the 12th year anniversary of Vodafone Ghana Foundation.”
Beneficiary communities were Okurase that received a maternity block to replace its previous single maternity room. The block is now serving the community and six other communities.
Others were the Achiase maternal project and the 100-computer supply project in Adaklu Ahunda Kpodzi in the Volta Region.
Mr Perbi said the Foundation was content with the support the kindred project was giving and gave an assurance to launch four projects every February to support communities at every level.
Mrs Esther Jones Safo, Municipal Director of Education, Ga North, lauded Vodafone Ghana Foundation for heeding the call of the School and providing them with equipment to get practical and hand-on-skills in ICT.
“The children cannot learn the ICT in a vacuum, they need practical experience and so these computers are going to go a long way to enhance their practical knowledge in ICT. I, therefore, want to use this opportunity to thank Vodafone Ghana Foundation for touching the lives of Ofankor schools in the Ga North Municipality,” he said.
She appealed to the Foundation to give the Kindergarten a facelift to make it attractive to the pupils to attend school regularly.
Mrs Kate Osei Owusu Afriyie, Headmistress of the Ofankor M/A ‘3’ Basic School, said the School was teaching ICT with illustrations on the board.
“Sometimes you have to imagine how the thing looks like and it takes a whole lot of time in teaching just a concept but with the help of the computer lab it is going to reduce the time of teaching, and the children will see the real thing illustrated on the board and it will enhance teaching and learning.
“Yes, Vodafone, I can’t thank them enough; they have really done well. I called on them and they came to do something wonderful and they are even planning to do more for us,” she said.
Mrs Afriyie implored God’s blessings on Vodafone for it to become a successful company.
