The West African Examination Council (WAEC) says the marking scheme for this year’s WASSCE will not be lowered.

This is contrary to calls for WAEC to consider the long pause in the academic calendar, caused by the COVID-19 pandemic.

Also said to have caused that statement was the reaction of some final year students on social media, who verbally assaulted President Akufo Addo, blaming him for their apparent failure at answering examination questions set for particular subjects, and their call to adjust the marking scheme for fears that many might fail.

Head of Test Development Division at WAEC, Carter Osafo, said the Council cannot lower the marking scheme for Ghanaian Final Year Students because it is applicable to all candidates in the Sub-Region.

Meanwhile, Head of the WAEC National Office- Ghana, Mrs. Wendy Addy-Lamptey has allayed fears that the Council’s credibility has been compromised.

This follows the leaking of the 2020 WAEC examiners list on social media few weeks ago. Addressing the media in Accra, Mrs. Addy-Lamptey said WAEC will ensure that its integrity is maintained, despite the leak.

She said WAEC will adopt innovative measures to cut out the illegal use of communication devices, such as mobile phones by students during examinations.
