Effutu MTTD records 92 Motor accidents in 2018

A total of 92 Motor accident cases were recorded by the Winneba District MTTD of the Ghana Police Service in 2018 as against 88 cases in 2017.

Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) Charles Obiri in charge of Winneba District MTTD who made this known in an interview with Ghana News Agency said 276 persons were killed as a result involving 62 commercial, 65 private and six motorbikes against 65 commercial, 63 private vehicles and five Motor Bikes in 2017.

According to him 13 of the accidents in 2018 were fatal, while a number of pedestrians knocked down as result of the accidents reduced from 20 in 2017 to 12 in 2018.

DSP Obiri stated that no male below 18 years was killed in the said accidents saying 14 males above 18 years, eight females above 18years and one female below 18 years were killed as a result of the accidents on the Winneba-Apam and Winneba Kasoa roads in 2018, against four males below 18 years, seven males above 18 years, five females above 18 and one female below 18 years killed in 2017.

He said about 80 percent of road accidents that occurred were due to negligence on the part of drivers, who ignored road safety regulations and road signs and failed to examine their vehicles before driving.

He appealed to all road users to strictly adhere to all the motor traffic and road safety rules and regulations to help curb the numerous carnages on the roads.
