A pilot registration exercise by the Electoral Commission (EC) to test the efficiency of its machines ahead of the 2020 elections is underway in Sekondi.
The two-day exercise is opened to all qualified voters.
The Electoral Commission is mandated by law to organise the 2020 general elections. It’s also in the process of compiling a new voters’ register for the elections.
The EC ahead of the exercise is organising a two-day pilot voter registration exercise at all its regional offices nationwide.
In Sekondi, the exercise which is opened to all qualified voters, started at 7 a.m. and will end 6 p.m.
Inline with the COVID-19 prevention protocols, hand washing facilities and non-contact thermometers have been provided with a designated officer in charge to ensure all entrants to the office go through. Also seats have been have arranged in manner which take care of the social distancing directive.
GBC’s Marie Aziz Tunde reports that it takes about twenty minutes on the average for one to go through the process.
The Western Regional Director of the Electoral Commission, Mrs Angela Tahoe, described the process as smooth and the Biometric Voter Registration machines had not given any problem since the exercise started.
Some officials of the various political parties present noted that they are observing the process for the two days to see how the machines will perform when under pressure.
Already some raised issues with network interruption with hitches which occasioned the restart of the machines.
