Expert pushes for gender equality in Ghana

A Gender and Labour Consultant, Ann Dela Apekey has called for laws and policies that are accountable to the rights of women in the formal and informal economy.
She also called for the ratification of the convention of international labour standard to protect women who engage in domestic and other forms of casual work.
Madam Ann Apekey made the call at the end of year review of the status of women in Ghana by the Network for Women’s Rights in Ghana NETRIGHT, a civil society organization in Accra.
She noted that there is still a wide inequality gap between men and women in the country.
The Network for Women’s Rights in Ghana, NETRIGHT, is a civil society organization keen on working together to bring gender issues to the attention of government.
The annual review on the status of women in Ghana assessed the gains, challenges and the way forward with issues affecting women. Some of the issues identified include gender based violence, discrimination against women in the formal and informal economy and land acquisition for women in agriculture.
A Gender and Labour Consultant, Ann Dela Apekey said Ghana should emulate the example of Senegal by increasing female representation in Parliament and other sectors of the economy.
The Coordinator, Alliance for Women in Media Africa, Shamima Muslim noted that one main agenda for NETRIGHT in 2019, is to push for the passage of the Land and Spousal Rights Bills.
In attendance were representatives of women groups across the country. Some citations were presented to deserving women.
