Fabrics used for production of face masks could have health implications

Prior to the Ghana Standards Authority’s publication of guidelines for locally made nose masks, many of the masks were made without official specifications to help serve the purpose for which its use is being pushed.

Whereas some have dyes in them others are just not safe to be worn on the nose and mouth.

Speaking to GBC-Obonu News in Tema, the Secretary-General of the Textiles, Garment and Leather Employees Union, Abraham Koomson, stressed that the use of fabrics made for fashion is not suitable for the production of nose masks; explaining that the chemicals used in producing them may have some health-threatening components.

He stated that it will be prudent the government ensures strict regulation of the manufacture and sale of the nose masks.

He mentioned that the companies designated to produce the fabrics including GTP and ATL are using the standardized fabrics which are safe for use by all.
