Fire guts Odawna market Wednesday night

There was a fire outbreak at Odawna Market behind the Ghana Commercial bank at Kwame Nkrumah Circle in Accra, on Wednesday night. The fire destroyed goods worth thousands of Ghana cedis.
The Deputy Chief Fire Officer of the Ghana National Fire Service, Kweku Manu Afful who spoke to Radio Ghana at the scene said they could not readily confirm what may have ignited the fire saying, investigation is ongoing to ascertain the cause of the fire.
When Radio Ghana’s Adiza Bawa and Bridget Amewudo got to the scene, a combination of a team from the Ghana National Fire Service and the Ghana Police Service were already there to put the situation under control.
Personnel from the Ghana Police service had to use tasers to ward off the crowd that had at the entrance of the market to prevent them from entering.
Some eyewitnesses who were around at the time the fire started said they heard an explosion and later saw smoke bellowing out of the market and called the fire service.
They added that the fire started at about 7pm.
The Deputy Chief Fire officer Kweku Manu Afful said they got a call at about 8:04pm and got to the scene at 8:07. He noted that gaining access to the to fight the fire was a major challenge.
Witnesses lauded the GNFS for their prompt response in getting to the scene. The fire has since been brought under control.
