Funeral rites for Yaa Naa Abdulai IV begins amidst tight security

The final funeral rites of the late overlord of Dagbon, Yaa Naa Mahamud Abdulai IV, began  Thursday evening at the refurbished Old Gbewaa Palace in Yendi.

Ahead of the rites, the Regional Security Council got the Abudus to sign an undertaking that they will vacate the renovated palace after the rites.

There is also heavy police presence in Yendi as the police and military personnel have assured of maximum security throughout the period of the final funeral rites of the two overlords.

The commencement of the funeral was symbolically marked by the playing of drums and firing of gunshots last night when the Regent entered the palace.

A number of chiefs and other traditional rulers from all parts of Dagbon accompanied by drummers and traditional dancers are also in Yendi to partake in the funeral amidst tight security.

According to reports, there were cheers when the Abudu royal family officially entered Naa Gbewa place to mark the beginning of the funeral after its keys were handed over to the family.

As contained in the road map, the final funeral rites for the Ya-Na Mahamadu Abdulai IV will be performed from December 14, to December 28, while that of Ya-Na Yakubu Andani II would also be held from January 4 to January 19, 2019.

A Committee of Eminent Chiefs brokering peace in the Dagbon chieftaincy crises agreed on a roadmap for lasting peace in Yendi, in the Northern Region.

The Committee, after 12 years of deliberations, have concluded that the two faction in the feud – the Abudu and Andani Royal gates – should take turns to bury and hold funerals for the two Chiefs of the gates.

The Committee Chaired by the Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu ll, presenting the Plan to President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo at the Jubilee House on Wednesday (November 22), said he would leave no stone unturned to ensure lasting peace in the area.
