The Ga Mantse, His Royal Majesty King Teiko Tackie Tsuru II, has expressed his full support for Ghana’s hosting of the 2025 World English-Language Scrabble Players Association Championship (WESPAC), when he welcomed the leadership of the Scrabble Association of Ghana (SCAG) and the Local Organizing Committee to his palace in Accra.

The courtesy visit was to officially inform the Ga Mantse about the upcoming world championship, seek his royal blessings, and discuss preparations for the international event.

King Teiko Tackie Tsuru II commended the organizers for promoting what he described as an “intellectual and culturally enriching sport”, encouraging young people to engage in Scrabble as a way to sharpen their minds and strengthen educational pursuits.

The 2025 WESPAC Championship will take place from November 12 to 16, 2025, at The Palms by Eagles in Airport City, Accra.

The tournament will feature 369 players from 45 countries, marking the first time Ghana — and only the second time in West Africa — will host the prestigious global competition.

Chairman of the Local Organizing Committee, Reginald D. Laryea, highlighted the significance of the championship, saying it offers Ghana a platform to showcase its hospitality, boost tourism, and promote educational sports.

“This event is not just about Scrabble; it’s about putting Ghana on the world map, boosting tourism, and inspiring young people to take up the game,” Mr. Laryea said.

President of the Scrabble Association of Ghana, Captain Haruna Adamu (Rtd.), also reaffirmed the Association’s commitment to ensuring a world-class tournament through collaboration with key stakeholders in both the public and private sectors.

He emphasized that beyond the championship, SCAG is working to promote Scrabble in schools and communities across the country as a tool for literacy and critical thinking development.

With Ghana preparing to host the world’s best Scrabble players, WESPAC 2025 is expected to attract global attention, provide economic benefits, and reinforce the nation’s growing reputation as a hub for international events and intellectual sports in Africa.
