The Ghana Education Service (GES) has closed down the Accra Newtown Experimental D/A School and ordered students to stay home after a nearby building collapsed, killing three and injuring 20.
Speaking to CitiNews, the GES Director-General, Prof Ernest Kofi Davis, after a security briefing at the school, said the service will hold an emergency meeting with relevant stakeholders to determine the next steps forward
“We are going to work with the regional and national teams, including the estate department, to ensure that the remaining structures are safe for use. If they are not, we will advise students to avoid those areas”
The collapse at the school has heightened concerns over the safety of school infrastructure in the region, prompting urgent assessments to prevent further tragedies
Rescue teams from the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) reached the scene within minutes of the incident at 5:01 p.m. alert to launch a search and recovery mission.
Out of the 23 people buried under the debris, 20 survivors were found among them three minors were pulled out and rushed for medical care. Tragically, three victims (two women and one man) lost their lives; their remains are now with the police for further inquiry.
