Ghana on Monday, November 19, joins the rest of the world to mark “World Toilet Day”.
The celebration is aimed at raising awareness about people in the world who do not have access to a toilet, though it considered as part of people’s right to have clean water and sanitation.
The Ministry of Sanitation, Water and Resource is embarking on some awareness raising activities aimed at improving knowledge and attitude towards improved Sanitation. This year’s “World Toilet Day” will be commemorated at the Mantse Agbona at James Town in the Greater Accra region. The theme for this year’s commemoration is “When Nature Calls What Do You Do?”
Speaking on GBC’s Uniiq FM Breakfast Show, the Chief Executive Officer of Kings Hall Media, Emmanuel Addai, said it is possible to stop open defecation in Ghana because some regions like the northern region have taken the agenda to stop open defecation seriously.
He explained that the Community-led Total Sanitation Program is turning some communities open defecation-free in Ghana.  He said it is easier to implement the Community-led Total Sanitation approach in the rural areas due to their small population unlike the urban cities where the population is large.

” It is possible to because some districts have taken it seriously. When you go to the northern region, more than 2,000 communities out of the 4,000 communities. We have more than 50% of communities in the northern region which are open defecation-free as I speak. And Tatali in the Northern region, out of the 172 communities, 162 have stopped open defecation, and so it is possible,” he noted.
He added that the dignity and health as a nation is at risk due to open defecation in that tourists will be disinterested in coming into the country when they realise the country is an open defecation prone country. Therefore urged the to enforce laws against open defecation.
