Ghana Statistical Service ready for 2020 Population and Housing Census

The Ghana statistical Service says it is ready for the upcoming 2020 population and housing census on June 29.

Speaking to the media on the sidelines of an inauguration ceremony for the Wa Municipal Census Implementation Committee, the Upper West Regional Statistician, Sixtus Dery, said the census is key to allocation of resources for national development.

He said all the necessary arrangement including trial census and government’s commitment in the procurement of logistics to ensure that the exercise goes on smoothly has been made.

Ghana has successfully conducted five censuses since independence in 1957 and the last census was conducted in 2010.

The results of the exercises have provided the country with a wide range of data for the use of central government, regional and district administrators for development purposes. Ghana Statistical Service is expected to have the sixth post-independence population census to be conducted from June 29 this year.

 The Upper West Regional Statistician, Sixtus Dery, indicated that significant progress has been made towards the census to ensure that the exercise goes digitised and smooth.

“We are very ready; we have conducted trial census so our questionnaire are tested and ready, logistics are being procured and government have shown commitment to provide the needed resources.”

“Trainers are being recruited to train our people and field officers have registered through the online portal and very soon we going to do the shortlisting.”

“So for us, we are very prepared and ready to kick start the census process of June 2020,” he stated.

Mr Dery appealed to all Ghanaians to avail themselves to be counted during the exercise.

“All we want to say is that we are appealing to the public. This is a national exercise and the benefits are for all of us. We are all going to be counted to help government in allocation of resources which is for our own development.”

“Everybody should put hands on deck and ensure that we are all counted. Don’t sit down and wait for them to come and count you, ask to be counted because in this 2020 the slogan is: You count so get counted,” Mr Dery added.

The Presiding Member of the Wa Municipal Assembly, Mahama Topie, who performed the inauguration on behalf of the MCE, reminded the Committee Members to be diligent in executing their task.

He said the success of the exercise depends on their commitment to the exercise.

The 8-member committee is made up of the Municipal Coordinating Director as Chairman, Municipal Statistician, Municipal Information Officer, and Municipal Population Officer.

The rest are Municipal Director of Health, Municipal Director of Education, Representative of Chiefs and Director of National Commission for Civic Education.

The Committee is expected to steer the affairs of the census in the Wa Municipality.

The Chairman of the Committee, Haruna Amadu Zure thanked the Ghana Statistical service for the trust reposed in them and pledged that they will work hard to ensure the success of the exercise
