Cyber Security law to be passed this year to check internet fraud

The passage of the cybersecurity bill into law is in its final stage. This means that the use of the internet will be regulated to allow for certification to use it.

At a meet the press briefing in Accra on the upcoming Freedom Online Coalition Conference, the Deputy Communications Minister, Vincent Sowah Odotei announced that the law will be ready at the end of the year.

He stated that measures are put in place to check the use of the internet to propagate false information during the elections.

The lack of an Act to combat cybercrime has been a difficult one for the country. The abuse of the internet therefore increases by the day, and this means the country urgently needs to pass the cybersecurity bill into law.

The Ministry of Communication is part of the Freedom Online Coalition which is committed to protecting fundamental human rights including freedom of privacy and expression.

The Deputy Minister for Communications, Vincent Sowah said the cybersecurity law will be ready this year.

Currently, Ghana chairs the FOC which comprises 31 countries including the US, UK, and Kenya. The National Security Advisor, Dr Antwi-Boasiako, said lack of funds is the major challenge in extending the reach of internet services and dealing with the issue of cybersecurity.

The Coalition holds annual multi-stakeholder conference to review and deepen the discussion on internet freedom to democracy and economic developments.

The 8th annual conference will be held from the 6th to 8th this month at the Kofi Annan Peace Keeping Centre on the theme ‘Achieving a Common Vision for Internet Freedom’.
