The World Skills International in Partnership with the Ministry of Education, Rwanda and the Integrated Polytechnic Regional College (I.P.R.C.) has organised the World Skills Africa Kigali 2018 Regional Skills Competition as part of efforts to institutionalise an African World Skills Competition in the African Continent. It is to also challenge the youth to aspire for greater excellence in Technical, Vocational Education and Training (TVET) and skills development for national and global economic transformation.

The Executive Director for COTVET, Dr. Fred Kyei Asamoah speaking on GBC’s Uniiq FM Breakfast Show said, “having a medal in the World Skills medal is one of the highest you can ever have and the first for Ghanaian Technical student, is exciting. It is an International Medal that many will be able to get the opportunity to have. That one alone good.”

He added that the network that was built in Kigali by meeting international community and being exposed to what is out there in the world, shows that we can compete as a country and capable of becoming the best center of excellence. He said the National skills competition that was held in the country is comparable to World Skills Africa competition in Kigali. Therefore, he is very confident that the country will perform very well in the World Skills competition with a little capacity put into the competitors.

He also revealed that Government has concluded the process to equip all the Technical and Vocational Institutions and Polytechnics with the necessary equipment and buildings this year. Also come 2019 they will be embarking on retraining of all the trainers to be equipped with the requisite skills.

He said, “doing the National Skills Competition annually and continuously will inform our infrastructure, methodology of training and enhance collaboration between industry and our academia.  The economy  of the country will boom without any problems of unemployment when the Industry and academia team up and work together.”

“This is what we are trying to tell all parents and young people across the country that 80% every workplace requires TVET skills. Definitely Ghana can be beyond aid. To be there, we need to be able to get close to this percentage. That is why I am encouraging the all young ones that they should opt for nothing but skills. We need to ensure that students are able to go through their basic stem; Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics. This makes you ready to learn anything. Most importantly I encourage more students to go into TVET.” He concluded.
