The Ghana National Union of Technical Students (GNUTS) has petitioned the Eastern Regional Police Command to, as a matter of urgency, investigate and identify the unscrupulous officers involved in the unfortunate incident that occurred on Friday, December 15, 2018 at the Universal Hall of the Koforidua Technical University.

This was contained in a press release signed by the Coordinating Secretary of the Union, Sandra Agoli Iddrisu.

The release stated that about 4:00 am on the said date, fully armed officers of Special Weapons and Tactics Unit (SWAT) of the police service numbering sixty stormed the universal hostel of the university with electric shockers, fan belts, axes and riffle without recourse to management and arrested some students.

The release says affected students were subjected to some police drills and beaten to pulp without resisting arrest.

The release further said the molestation got worse when they got to the forecourt of the regional police station where they were made to roll from one point to the other, carrying of logs, making squats, lying down and facing the sun.

The union described the arrest as unlawful, restricted by the police contrary to laws of the land.

They are therefore requesting for medical treatment for all those who sustained injuries, compensation from the police service and reversal of the bond that the students were made to sign under duress.

It also demands the reassignment of the Eastern Regional operations commander of the Ghana police service, DSP Kartey Otumi.

However, the police refuse to comment on the issue when contacted by our news team.
