Government to distribute free 500,000 charcoal stoves to rural folks in 2020

The Government, through the Ministry of Energy, has planned to give out about 500,000 cooking stoves to hundreds of households in rural areas of Ghana free of charge come 2020 financial year.

According to the report of the Select Committee on Mines and Energy on the 2020 annual budget estimates of the Ministry, the committee chairman, Emmanuel Akwasi Gyamfi, said Government has planned to “distribute 500,000 improved charcoal cookstoves in rural and peri-urban areas where LPG fuel for cooking is not immediately available”.

Mr. Gyamfi again noted that the ministry will procure and distribute 60.000 LPG cookstoves to rural communities too.

Under the petroleum sector development, the Ministry intends to undertake the following programmes and projects in the sector for the year 2020:

i. Signed two Petroleum Agreements;

ii. lncrease Greater Jubilee Oil Production from 24.34mmbbls to 34.50mmbbls and that of Gas from 37.94Bcf to 35.58 Bcf;

iii. Increase TEN Production from 17. 19mmbbls to 24.93mmbbls and that of Gas from 35,15 Bcf to 21.03 Bcf;

iv. Increase Sankofa-Gye-Nyame Oil Production 12.13mmbbls to 1773mmbbls and that of Gas from 45.8 Bcf to 47.89 Bcf

On renewal energy, the Ministry has planned for the following projects in the coming year:

i. Increase penetration of renewable energy supply mix from 6.15MW to 30MW;

ii. Distribute 10,000 Solar Lantern;

iii. Connect 5 communities to mini-grid electricity;

iv. Install 10 Solar PV at public facilities, and

v. Install 4O standalone Solar PV to public and households.

In this regard, Parliament has approved an amount of Five Hundred and Eighty-Five Million Seven Hundred and Sixty-Six Thousand Three Hundred and Twenty-Seven Ghana Cedis (GH¢585,766,327) for the Ministry for the implementation of its programmes and activities for the 2020 Financial Year.
