Government says it has not ceded lands belonging to the Department of Parks and Gardens to any private developer. This follows reports that more than 140 trees at the Department of Parks and Gardens had been cut down to make way for a multi-purpose office complex to be constructed by a private developer.

The report said about five thousand (5,000) flowers and other ornamental plants had been destroyed leaving the area bare and barricaded.

Workers of the Department could not say who ordered the trees to be cut down but believe it was an order ‘from above’ and that the place had been sold out to a yet to be known developer.

Many have raised environmental concerns on the matter especially for a country like Ghana that is said to be losing its forest belt at a faster rate than any other in the world.

Speaking at the Meet the Press Series in Accra, however Deputy Minister of Local Government and Rural Development, OB Amoah, explained that there were attempts by the previous administration to lease two-point two acres of the lands in question to a private developer.

According to him, the matter has been referred to the Attorney General for advice.
