Story by Nana Ama Gyapong.

Dr. Seyram Wordui, a paediatrician at the Korle-bu Teaching Hospital has revealed that jaundice can cause the death of newborn babies when detected late. She made this revelation during the health segment on GTV breakfast show earlier this morning.

Newborn jaundice is a yellowing of a baby’s skin and eyes. Newborn jaundice is very common and can occur when babies have a high level of bilirubin, a yellow pigment produced during normal breakdown of red blood cells.

According to Dr. Wordui, early detection of jaundice in newborn babies can be prevented whilst late detection can be very difficult to treat because the causes of jaundice might have already crossed into the brain of the newborn baby.

In cases where the child does not die, she added, the child can grow up with disabilities such as deafness, epilepsy or unable to walk properly.

She described that jaundice can be cleared through the excretion of the newborn baby depending on the level of jaundice the child has.

“New mothers should check their baby’s eyes and skin mostly in sunlight as well as their feeding process for early detection of fatal jaundice.”

She advised new mothers to check their baby’s eyes and skin mostly in sunlight as well as their feeding process for early detection.

She concluded by saying that every child has jaundice.
