The Ghana AIDS Commission has revealed that about 337,435 people are currently living with HIV in Ghana, with the Greater Accra Region recording the highest number of cases at 77,512.
Deputy Director of Programmes at the Ghana AIDS Commission, Derick Oppong-Agyare, disclosed this on Adom TV’s current affairs programme, The Big Agenda, where he said the Commission’s interventions over the years have helped prevent the figure from rising further.
He said the data reflects the reality of HIV in the country and urged stakeholders to intensify efforts in testing, treatment, and prevention to help achieve the goal of ending AIDS as a public health threat by 2030.
According to Mr Oppong-Agyare, three areas in Greater Accra currently record the highest HIV burden: Korle-Klottey, Tema, and Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA).
Explaining the 2025 HIV prevalence rate, he said 14 out of every 1,000 people are living with HIV, which translates to 140 out of every 10,000 people or 1,400 out of every 100,000 people.
He noted that abstinence, which formed part of the commission’s ABC (Abstinence, Be faithful, Condom use) campaign, has become less effective as a standalone prevention approach.
“You can be living with HIV for 14 years and not show any symptoms,” Mr Oppong-Agyare said.
He further disclosed that a significant proportion of people living with HIV are between the ages of 15 and 24, stressing the need for increased awareness, testing, and access to treatment among young people.
