Former Deputy Health Minister, Dr. Bernard Okoe Boye has asked the public to disregard rumors that the Covid-19 vaccine to be rolled out in the country is harmful. He said there is no cause for alarm and such propaganda should not be countenanced.
Speaking on GBC`s Current Affairs programme “FOCUS”, which discussed the surge in a new strain of Covid-19, Dr. Okoe Boye said Ghana has vaccinated children against several diseases in the country and this should not be different.
He emphasized that the vaccines are safe and will help to reduce the spread of the disease.
Former Communication Minister, Dr. Edward Omane Boamah said government should make it a point to increase the number of people to be vaccinated to at least twenty-two million.
If that happens, 70% of the people will be covered and will put Ghana in a pole position to fight the disease.
Head of Disease Surveillance at the Ghana Health Service, Dr. Franklin Asiedu-Bekoe reiterated that the Astra Zeneca vaccine is useful in Ghana because the dominant strain is the UK variant.
He however cautioned that until the vaccines arrive, all the protocols must be religiously observed.
All three panelists, on the programme called on government to as a matter of urgency, start sensitizing the public to the Ebola virus, though Ghana has not recorded any case yet.
