Deputy Head of the National Cancer Control Unit at the Ghana Health Service, Dr. Efua Commey says the increasing cancer cases should be a source of worry to all Ghanaians.

In an Interview on GBC’s ‘Behind the News’, she noted that this year alone, the service has recorded about four thousand cases, adding that it is about time Ghana acted to control the situation.

Dr. Commey said it is unfortunate cancer in general has not been given the needed attention in the country.

“The fact that cancer started from an area does not mean that’s where it will be confined because it can spread. So it can leak into the blood and go to other organs and at that stage, you are getting into the latter stage.”

Dr. Commey cited unhealthy lifestyles as causes of the rise in cancer cases.

The Chief Executive of Breast Care International, an NGO, Dr. Beatrice Wiafe Addae said it is worrying that people still attribute breast cancer to spiritual causes.

She called for state support for breast cancer eradication.
