The Director-General of the Ghana Health Service (GHS), Dr. Samuel Kaba Akoriyea, has paid a working visit to the Central Medical Stores (CMS) in Tema to familiarise himself with the facility’s operations and engage with staff on existing challenges within the national health supply chain.

The visit, which forms part of the Service’s efforts to strengthen the country’s health logistics system, allowed Dr. Kaba to tour the CMS warehouse and logistics sections, where he interacted with management and front-line staff. He sought their input on issues such as supply-chain inefficiencies, inventory management challenges, and staff welfare concerns, with the aim of identifying practical solutions.

According to the Service, the engagement was also meant to deepen understanding of the facility’s operations and explore ways to ensure the uninterrupted supply of medical commodities to public health facilities across the country.

Speaking after the visit, Dr. Kaba emphasised that a well-functioning logistics system is essential for the delivery of quality and timely healthcare.

He also mentioned that the Ghana Health Service will work closely with the Central Medical Stores, relevant partners, and staff to implement key improvements, including enhanced inventory-tracking systems and regular staff-capacity training where needed.

The Central Medical Stores serves as Ghana’s main hub for the storage and distribution of both drug and non-drug consumables to all public health facilities nationwide. It plays a crucial role in ensuring the timely delivery of life-saving products and supporting the overall effectiveness of the national health system.
