The Ashanti Regional Directorate of the Ghana Health Service with support from its partners is to start registering households for the distribution of Long Lasting Insecticide Treated Nets from today (October 4).
The registration exercise which is to last for seven days will enable the directorate get more people to get the treated nets to help in the fight against malaria in the country.This was disclosed by the Ashanti Regional Director of Health, Dr Emmanuel Tenkorang at a media briefing in Kumasi.
The directorate is anticipating that at least 90 percent of the population in the region will be covered in the registration exercise and thus get the treated nets.
The directorate is also to start a measles supplementary immunisation for children between the ages of nine months and five years next month.
Dr Emmanuel Tenkorang also explained that the treated nets reduces the burden of malaria in order to promote, the socio economic development of the country. This according to Dr Tenkorang can only be achieved if more households get registered and use the treated nets when they are supplied to them.
He said vector control is an essential strategy for malaria control and the treated nets is one of the vector control interventions. He therefore encouraged residents in the region to participate fully in the registration exercise.
