The Minister of Finance Ken Ofori Attah says government intends to improve expenditure to the health sector to achieve Universal Health Coverage. He announced that government has spent close to 22 billion Ghana cedis on improvements in the health sector between 2017 and 2021.
This led to a 52 % increase in patronage of the National Health Insurance Scheme. The Finance Minister made the point at the maiden edition of Assembly of Ministers of Health in ECOWAS in Accra.
“We spent a cumulative sum of GHS 21.13 billion between 2017-2021 on healthcare. As we speak our health expenditure per capita is US$75 which compares favorably with US$39 in low-income countries but is still lower than the average of US$119 for lower-middle income countries.”
Mr. Ofori Atta urged Finance Ministers in the sub-region to come up with innovative ways of making available funds to enhance health security in the Sub-Region.
