Management of the Ho Teaching Hospital in the Volta Region has launched a fund raising exercise to equip its Cardiothoracic Center to provide standard cardiovascular treatment at the facility.

The existing cardio unit at the Hospital delivers medical treatment for cardiovascular diseases but lacks the equipment to conduct treatment in severe cases such as surgical operations on the heart.

The acting Chief Executive Officer of the Ho Teaching Hospital, Dr. John Tampuori said the exercise was initiated to prevent long travelling to Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital in Accra for cardio treatments since interventions to cardiovascular conditions are time bound.

Statistics at the Ho Teaching Hospital indicate that as of November last year, the cardiovascular unit had 1,023 patients seeking cardiovascular treatment at the unit after its establishment about three years ago. From January this year till date, 729 patients were treated on Out Patient Department (OPD) basis.

The Head of Cardio Unit at the Hospital, Prof Frank Edwin at the launch of the fund raising exercise dubbed “Save a Heart, Save a Life” said an ultra modern cardiothoracic centre will cost over three million dollars to be constructed.

He said the hospital has already built the structure but requires modern medical equipment for furnishing to complete the project.

The acting Chief Executive Officer of the Ho Teaching Hospital, Dr John Tampuori was hopeful that a well equipped cardiothoracic centre will bring relief to patients and care-givers in the Volta and neighbouring regions.

He said the project will also ensure that the Hospital becomes a medical tourist centre in the region as well as manage both heart and lung diseases.

Dr Tampuori therefore appealed to all and sundry to support the realization of the project to enable the hospital to discharge its duty as a specialist healthcare facility.

The Cardiothoracic Unit at the Ho Teaching Hospital is also a resource centre for students of the University of Health and Allied Sciences in Ho.
