The Junior Doctors’ Association of Ghana (JDA-GH) says its members will withdraw their services nationwide following what they describe as months of neglect and unfair treatment.
In a statement signed by President of JDA, Dr. (Med) Louis Afia Nkrumah, the group said over 200 junior doctors have gone without salaries for between 10 and 14 months, while others previously on payroll have had their pay halted without explanation. It added that more than 800 medical officers have also been awaiting posting for over a year.
Despite several engagements with authorities, the association said no lasting solution has been provided.
As part of the action, outpatient services will be suspended from Tuesday, 7 October to Thursday, 9 October. Emergency services will also be withdrawn from Friday, 10 October until further notice. Inpatients will continue to be managed until discharge, but no new admissions will be made.
The association warned that the exploitation of junior doctors “will no longer be tolerated” and placed responsibility for any disruption to healthcare services on the Ministry of Health and the government.
It urged stakeholders to act immediately to resolve the matter.
