More health workers to be recruited – President Akufo-Addo says in 2021 SONA

President Akufo-Addo has hinted that government will continue to invest in the health sector by recruiting more health professionals in his second term in office.

President Akufo-Addo stated this when he delivered the first State of the Nation Address (SONA) for his second term outside the Chamber of Parliament today (March 9, 2021).

He said his first term saw the recruitment of one hundred thousand (100,000) healthcare professionals into the country’s healthcare service but his second term will see to it that more health workers are recruited to improve healthcare delivery in Ghana.

The President indicated that each of the sixteen (16) regional hospitals will be designated as a Centre of Excellence in the different specialties of medicine under government’s Agenda 111 initiative — the largest ever investment in healthcare infrastructure in Ghana.

Agenda 111, among other things will see to the construction of 100-bed District Hospitals in one hundred and one (101) Districts with no hospitals, seven (7) Regional Hospitals for the new Regions, including one for the Western Region, the construction of two (2) new psychiatric hospitals for the Middle and Northern Belts and the rehabilitation of the Effia-Nkwanta Hospital in the Western Region.

President Akufo-Addo said construction of some of these hospitals have commenced and will continue without interruption.

On government’s Electronic Medical Records system (E-Health), President Akufo-Addo said it is being implemented in some health facilities.

They are Korle-Bu, Komfo Anokye, Ho, Tamale and Cape Coast Teaching Hospitals.

It is also being implemented in several district hospitals in the Central Region.

He added that the Upper East, Upper West and the Bono regions will also be migrated onto the platform in five days.
