The Chief Executive Officer of the National Health Insurance Authority (NHIA), Dr. Victor Asare Bampoe, has reaffirmed the Authority’s commitment to delivering a responsive, inclusive, and sustainable National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS) that works for all Ghanaians.

Speaking at a stakeholders’ conference at the Alisa Hotel, organized by the NHIA, Dr. Bampoe described the ongoing reforms within the Authority as part of a broader government vision to achieve Universal Health Coverage (UHC) by 2030.

He said one of the government’s most ambitious undertakings in health policy history is the Free Primary Healthcare for All Initiative which presents an opportunity to strengthen Ghana’s healthcare delivery at the community level.

“Today’s conference presents a unique opportunity to align on the phased implementation, funding mechanisms, and accountability framework,” he said. “Every actor must leave here with a clear understanding of their role, timeline, and deliverables.”

Dr. Bampoe announced that the Authority is also working to operationalize the Ghana Medical Care Trust Fund, also known as the Ghana Medical Trust Fund, which he described as “a vital safety net for persons living with non-communicable diseases, and another key element in the UHC equation.”

Outlining a three-point vision to drive the Authority’s strategic direction, Dr. Bampoe said the NHIA is focusing on strengthening internal control systems and staff welfare, restoring public trust and confidence, and delivering on key government health initiatives.

“This vision is our roadmap to a more responsive, inclusive, and sustainable NHIS,” he emphasized.

Dr. Bampoe urged all stakeholders, including public institutions, private providers, civil society, traditional leaders, and development partners to collaborate effectively in ensuring that the scheme delivers on its mandate.

“The work ahead is not easy, but it can be achieved. If we leave here with renewed commitments and resolutions but fail to act, we will have failed the people of Ghana,” he cautioned. “But I am confident that we will not fail.”

He further called for collective efforts to end illegal charges and restore public confidence in the health insurance system.

“Together we can rebuild trust. Together, we can end illegal charges. Together, we can protect the health of our people. Let us reset the momentum, protect the promise of the NHIS, and deliver health for all,” Dr. Bampoe concluded.
