Keloid formation is a common skin condition in which a raised, itchy and sometimes painful bump appears on the skin, often after an injury or surgery.

The founder of Skin Foundation Africa, Kofi Ansah Brifo, explained on the GTV Breakfast Show on March 16, 2026, that not every bump on the body is a keloid. However, he said persistent itching and pain may indicate that a keloid is developing or growing.

According to Dr Brifo, keloids can form anywhere on the body but are more commonly found on the lower chin, chest and the back of the neck.

He added that people with a history of keloid formation, acne or other skin infections are more likely to develop the condition.

Dr Brifo further noted that keloids may also form after illnesses such as Chickenpox or other skin infections, explaining that inflammation can contribute to their development. If left untreated, he said, keloids can become thicker and more noticeable over time.

He stated that early warning signs of keloid growth include itching, discharge and thickening of the skin.

“If you are prone to keloid formation, it is important to seek medical attention early to prevent further growth,” he advised.
