The Ashanti region has recorded 783 new cases of Alpha and Delta variants of COVID-19 between the 19th and 25th of this month.

Eight-five Basic and Senior High Schools in the region recorded 365 of the cases with 254 pupils and students recovering, while 111 are still undergoing treatment.

The Ashanti Regional Health Director, Dr. Emmanuel Tinkorang who disclosed this to journalists in Kumasi expressed serious concern about the blatant disregard for the COVID-19 protocols, saying has accounted for the rise in new cases.

He cautioned the public to avoid practices that could trigger the spread of the deadly disease. A total of 1,595 health workers in the region have so far tested positive for the virus.

Dr. Emmanuel Tinkorang, giving an update on the emergence of the Delta variant said, the region had been recording an average of 120 new cases of COVID-19 daily mostly in the Greater Kumasi area.

He said the fight against the pandemic is a collective responsibility of every citizen, adding that no effort of health authorities can stop the spread of the disease if the citizenry continue to disregard the safety protocols.

Dr. Tinkorang cautioned facilities including public and private hospitals charging for COVID testing to refrain from such act, as the Ghana Health Service will punish any health facility caught in such act.
