Kyeremeh Atuahene

20,068 people were infected with HIV last year in the country. Of this number, nearly three thousand were children under 15 years.

This was made known by the Ghana AIDS Commission as it released the 2019 National and Sub-National HIV/AIDS Estimates and Projections in Accra.

The Director- General of the Ghana AIDS Commission, Kyeremeh Atuahene, said although Ghana’s prevalence rate is not as high as other countries, the issue of testing and prevention needs to be taken seriously.

He said it is even more worrying that new infections among young people between 15 and 24 years stand at 28 percent of last year’s data.

Mr. Atuahene said the Regions of the North remain the ones with the least prevalence.

The Director of Technical Services of the Commission, Dr. Fred Nana Poku hinted of plans to roll out self-testing for HIV.
