A dermatologist and founder of the Skin Foundation Africa, Kofi Ansah Brifo, has warned that the continued use of potent steroid creams is a major cause of stretch marks and failed skin treatments among many Ghanaians.

He explained that many people, particularly young people, use harsh products containing strong steroids without being aware of the risks, only to later develop stretch marks and other skin complications.

“These steroids damage the skin’s collagen, leading to stretch marks, skin thinning and other complications,” he said.

Speaking on the GTV Breakfast Show on March 9, 2026, Dr Brifo said many of these products are sold without medical supervision and that their misuse can lead to treatment-resistant fungal infections, skin cancer and mental health concerns.

He added that the most common areas affected by stretch marks include the lower back, breast area, inner thighs and shoulders.

Dr Brifo emphasised the need for public education and stricter regulation of such products.

“We need to understand how the skin works and how these products affect it,” he said.

He explained that the skin has three main layers — the dermis, epidermis and subcutaneous tissue — and that potent steroids damage the dermis, causing structural problems that can take a long time to repair.

Dr Brifo also urged the Food and Drugs Authority to intensify efforts to stop the sale of unauthorised skin-lightening creams.

The International League of Dermatological Societies has also warned that the misuse of such products is becoming a growing global public health concern, particularly in Africa and South Asia, where lighter skin tones are often socially preferred.
