Public cautioned against smoking and consumption of frozen drinks as stroke cases increase

The New Juaben North Municipal Health Director, Nana Yaa Konadu, has disclosed that more than 400 people died of stroke, while 269 others lost their lives from hypertension at hospitals in the Eastern Region in 2019.

Addressing the media in Koforidua to mark this year’s World Heart Day, Madam Yaa Konadu, said stroke related mortality in the Region, has been on the increase since 2017.

In 2018, heart related diseases, went up to more than 7900, while in 2019, more than 9,000 cases were reported in the Region.

On management and prevention of cardiovascular diseases, the Municipal Health Director, said change in lifestyle is the way to go.

A Representative of the Stroke Association Support Network, Mrs. Juliet Anaglo, cautioned the public against smoking and consuming frozen drinks.

She also called for more attention to be directed at cardiovascular related diseases.

Chairman of the Eastern Region Coalition of NGOs in Health, Emmanuel Mintah, expressed worry over the lack of massive education on measures to prevent stroke.

Chairman of Persons Living with Cardiovascular Disease and Stroke, Samuel Sedodo, appealed to government to pay critical attention to Cardiovascular diseases, by developing the right policies to manage the condition.
