CEO of the Accra London Health Centre, Dr. Vanessa Apea, has underscored the health benefits of sex as a form of physical exercise, while cautioning the public about stroke, its risk factors and early warning signs.
Speaking about stroke and general well-being on the GTV Breakfast Show, Dr Apea explained that stroke can affect anyone and occurs when blood flow to the brain is blocked or interrupted.
She said although sex is not commonly considered a form of exercise, it is a form of physical activity that can contribute to cardiovascular fitness and overall well-being.
“Sex is good exercise,” she noted, adding that regular physical activity, including sexual activity, can help keep the heart and blood vessels healthy.
Dr Apea, however, stressed the importance of recognising the early signs of stroke to ensure prompt medical attention.
She explained that sudden weakness or drooping of the arms and slurred speech are common warning signs that a person may be experiencing a stroke.
She urged the public not to ignore such symptoms, noting that early medical intervention can improve outcomes and reduce the risk of long-term disability or death.
The health expert also highlighted some risk factors associated with stroke, including irregular heartbeat.
“An irregular heartbeat could be a risk factor for stroke,” she explained, noting that conditions such as atrial fibrillation can cause blood clots that may travel to the brain and block blood flow.
Dr Apea advised the public to adopt healthy lifestyles, including regular exercise and a healthy diet, while controlling blood pressure, avoiding smoking and excessive alcohol consumption, and undergoing regular medical check-ups to detect conditions such as irregular heartbeat early.
She also called for increased public education on stroke, saying many people remain unaware of its symptoms and risk factors, which can lead to delays in seeking medical care.
