The University of Ghana Medical Centre (UGMC) has challenged claims made by Ghanaian-American comedian Michael Blackson about the care his late mother received at the hospital, saying its internal review found that several of the allegations shared on social media were inaccurate.

In a statement issued on Wednesday, August 5, 2026, the hospital extended its condolences to Mr Blackson and his family following the death of his 83-year-old mother on July 16.

UGMC said it treats complaints from patients and their families with the utmost seriousness and had conducted a thorough review of the concerns raised by the comedian.

According to the hospital, the findings did not support several of the claims made publicly by Mr Blackson.

“The facts presented by Mr. Blackson on social media contain numerous inaccuracies and do not accurately reflect the events that transpired in the provision of medical care to his 83-year-old mother,” the statement said.

The hospital said Mr Blackson’s mother was referred from another health facility and remained under its care from May 27 to July 16, 2026.

While responding to the allegations, UGMC said it could not disclose details of her diagnosis, treatment or medical records because of its legal and ethical duty to protect patient confidentiality, even after death.

“Out of respect for the dignity of the deceased and the privacy of her family, we will not disclose or discuss in the public domain the details of any patient’s diagnosis, treatment, medical records, or account of care,” the Centre stated.

UGMC stressed that all clinical decisions are made by qualified healthcare professionals in accordance with established medical standards and in the best interests of patients. It added that family representatives are consulted where appropriate during the decision-making process.

The hospital also addressed reports of an alleged physical altercation involving one of Mr Blackson’s sisters and a member of staff. It confirmed that the matter has been referred to the appropriate law enforcement authorities and declined to comment further while investigations are ongoing.

UGMC said it remains open to engaging with the family through the appropriate channels and assured the public that any specific allegations of staff misconduct would be investigated and, where necessary, referred to the relevant authorities.

The hospital also encouraged patients and their families with concerns about the services they receive to report them through its Client Services Unit for review and resolution.
