The Member of Parliament for Hohoe, Thomas Worlanyo Tsekpor, is appealing for urgent support for more than 700 residents displaced by flooding in his constituency in the Volta Region.
The affected residents are currently taking shelter in classrooms after floodwaters damaged or destroyed their homes.
Speaking on Joy FM’s Super Morning Show on Tuesday, September 29, Mr Tsekpor said several mud houses were among the properties badly affected by the flooding.
He said some residents also lost their personal belongings to the floodwaters.
“With the figures we have currently, we have over seven hundred as of yesterday [Monday] living in classrooms,” he said.
The MP said the situation requires immediate intervention as many of the affected residents have nowhere else to stay.
“We want support immediately because our people are in a dire situation,” he added.
In total, more than 3,000 residents have been displaced by the flooding, while over 400 homes have reportedly been affected.
The flooding followed the overflow of the River Dayi, which affected several communities in Hohoe.
The displaced residents are currently relying on temporary shelter as they wait for further assistance.
