The Chokosi Community in Tamale are calling on government, the Defense and Interior Ministries to as a matter of urgency intervene in the Chereponi communal violence between the Chokosis and Konkombas as it escalates by the day.

Addressing the media on current happenings in the area, the Spokesperson of the Chokosi Community in Tamale, Dr. Solomon Gumanga alleged that the Konkombas are advancing their attacks as information reaching them indicates that about two more communities were razed down Thursday morning.

According to him, the reinforcement sent to the area Wednesday by the Defense Ministry to keep calm has not helped the situation as Konkombas intensify their attacks on the Chokosis.

The Defense Ministry Wednesday deployed troops to contain the tensions in the Northern Regional district of Chereponi.

This is after two persons were reported dead and several others injured after a Tuesday morning clash between two tribes over a piece of land at Naduni, a farming community in the district.

There is already increased security presence from a joint police-military team.

The situation had escalated with reports of gunfire on Wednesday morning and more houses being set on fire.

Spokesperson of Chokosi Community in Tamale, Dr. Gumanga said the group met Wednesday with the Deputy Regional Minister, Solomon Boar, but the situation has not helped.

Dr. Gumanga called on the leadership of the other factions particularly the Minister of Defense, Dominic Nitiwul to intervene and talk to their people. He implored the Minister to play a neutral role in the situation since the situation is compelling the Chokosi community to believe that the minister is in bed with the other factions.

Dr. Gumanga also called on the Northern Regional Police Command to be proactive and do all it can to bring the perpetrators to book for peace to prevail.

The Communal clash was reportedly triggered by suspicions that some Chekosis had attacked some Konkombas with stones, which resulted in a confrontation. Some of the injured and are currently receiving treatment at the Chereponi Polyclinic.

Other casualties were also sent to the Saboba health center for treatment.
