Involve persons with disability in policies- Bono disability federation appeals

The Ghana Federation of Persons with Disability (PWDs) in the Bono Region has called on policy makers in the country to deepen the involvement of Persons with Disabilities in the formulation of various national policies.

They also recommend the formulation and implementation of a comprehensive and specific policy on employment for PWDs.

This was contained in a statement issued by the Bono Regional Chapter of GFPWDs to commemorate the International day of Persons with Disabilities.

Every December 3, has been set aside by the United Nations to celebrate International Day of Persons with Disabilities.

The day was instituted to end discrimination and stigmatization of PWDs.

In Ghana the theme chosen by the Federation to celebrate the day was” Disability Inclusive in the Sustainable Development Goals; Renewing Commitments and mobilizing support from stakeholders”.

The focus of this national theme builds on the global direction to promote greater commitment and partnerships that support the inclusion and participation of PWDs in the implementation of the SDGs in Ghana.

In a statement issued by the Bono Chapter of the Federation, it urged families of children with disabilities to recognize their right to education and ensure the full development of their potential.

It said, government should increase its support for PWDs in the formal sector in vocational training and other alternative employable areas to enable them engage in income generating activities.

The statement also called on Members of Parliament particularly those from the Bono region to initiate at least one project in their constituencies to promote the full inclusion of PWDs in societal activities.

They called on policy makers in the country to deepen the involvement of Persons with Disabilities in the formulation of various national policies.

The statement further recommended the formulation and implementation of a comprehensive and specific policy on employment for PWDs.

Finally the statement invited all to join the campaign to break all barriers that continue to impede the physical, economic and social development of PWDs and create an inclusive and accessible society for all.
