Kenyan 'convicted for selling plastic bags'

A court in Kenya has convicted a trader for selling banned plastic bags.

Nancy Wangari Roberts is to pay a fine of five hundred dollars or spend six months in prison. She is among several traders who have reportedly flouted the 2017 law.

The ban on plastic carrier bags in Kenya means that anyone found selling, manufacturing or carrying them could face fines of up to thirty eight thousand dollars, or prison sentences of up to four years. The government says the ban will help protect the environment.

Several other African countries including  Rwanda, Mauritania and Eritrea have also outlawed plastic carrier bags, but Kenya’s ban is seen as one of the toughest in the world.
