Schools in Kenya are to remain closed for another month as part of measures to stop the spread of coronavirus, the country’s health ministry has tweeted.
The East African nation has had a partial lockdown in place for several weeks, with travel in and out of major cities banned.
Schools were closed in mid-March and had been due to reopen on 4 May.
During the shutdown, the education ministry has been providing school programmes via radio and TV broadcasts.
Meanwhile, Health Minister Mutahi Kagwe says that more than 100 patients out of Kenya’s 355 recorded Covid-19 cases have now recovered.
The country’s national emergency coronavirus committee, which had met on Sunday, would soon be releasing guidelines for partial reopening of restaurants, his statement added.
He also warned Kenyans to be wary of malaria and not confuse it with Covid-19, the respiratory illness caused by coronavirus.
“We would like to remind all of you that mosquitoes are not under quarantine or lockdown… We need to protect ourselves from mosquitoes and to be on constant lookout for malaria symptoms such as fever, headache, joint pains, nausea and vomiting, which coincidentally, are also symptoms for Covid-19 disease,” Mr Kagwe said.
“Malaria testing and treatment are still available, and are offered free of charge in all government health facilities.”
