Kpando Secondary School marks Silver Jubilee

Kpando Secondary School, popularly known as KPASEC in the Volta Region has celebrated its 25 years of existence.

The 25th anniversary programme was sponsored by the 1993 Year Group who were pioneers of the educational reforms at the school.

It was in appreciation of the positive fruits of the transformation of the educational system in Ghana and their alma mater.

The 1993 Year Group handed over a renovated staff common room at a cost of GH¢100,000 to the school to mark the occasion.

25 years ago, the first batch of students of a new educational reform system in Ghana passed-out, when Ghana changed its educational system from 17 years of pre-university education to 12 years.

This means, until 1993, Ghana had an educational system of 11years post primary education, which comprised 4 years of middle school, 5 years of Ordinary “O” Level and 2 years of Advance “A” Level before entering University after primary 6.

But from 1993, the country is now having 6 years, which comprise 3 years of Junior Secondary School, JSS and 3 years of Senior Secondary School, SSS.

In later years, the names were changed from Junior Secondary School, JSS to Junior High School, JHS and that of Senior Secondary School, SSS to Senior High School, SHS, but the contents remaining virtually the same.

One of the leading second cycle institutions in Ghana which took part in the educational transformation in Ghana is Kpando Secondary School, popularly known as KPASEC.

In 1991, when the first batch of the SSS students were admitted at KPASEC, their seniors of “O” and “A” Levels were also at school.

Due to frequent seniority conflicts between the leaders of the two groups of students, the old students of KPASEC used to call the new batch ‘guineapigs.’ But the new batch called themselves ‘Aristocrats.’

On behalf of the school, Richard Mawuli Golo, the current Assistant Headmaster of KPASEC said the school shall forever be grateful to the 1993 year group and promised a judicious use of the facilities provided for desirable academic results.
