Former President Jerry John Rawlings has re-echoed the need to rekindle the spirit and integrity of the Ghanaian to restore a sense of order and social responsibility needed to advance the developmental agenda of the nation, through participatory local governance.

The Former President made this known, when a 30 member delegation of assembly members of the Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA) led by the Presiding member, Alfred Adjei called on him at his office on August 6.

President Rawlings who cited several case studies both pre and post his tenure of office also called for the strict enforcement of the Assembly Bye-laws, to improve sanitation whiles bemoaning the bad attitude of open defecation in communities and along the beach.

“In every community there are opinion leaders such as traditional authorities who are expected to ensure the norms of the society are adhered to but we have lost all that. “he said.

“Our beach fronts in the past were clean because of strong leadership exhibited by the traditional leaders,” he added.

Mr. Alfred Adjei later presented a plaque to the former President with the citation ” for your leadership and foresight in restoring local government administration in the Fourth Republic.” as an acknowledgement of his efforts in deepening decentralisation in Ghana.
