Minister for Local Government, Chieftaincy and Religious Affairs, Mahama Ayariga, joined the Mayor of Accra, Michael Kpakpo Allotey, and traders at Tudu to mark the September edition of the National Sanitation Day.
The exercise, held on Saturday, September 5, 2026, formed part of an inspection tour by the Minister and the Mayor to assess participation and compliance with the sanitation exercise among traders and businesses within the metropolis.

The inspection began at the Kinbu Traffic Light and continued through Tudu and other principal streets in the Central Business District.
During the exercise, Mayor Allotey briefed the Minister on the level of participation by traders and outlined measures being implemented by the Accra Metropolitan Assembly to maintain cleanliness in the Central Business District beyond the monthly sanitation exercise.

At Tudu, Mr Ayariga expressed satisfaction with the level of participation and joined the traders in the exercise.
He took a broom from one of the traders and personally swept a section of the street, demonstrating the standard of cleanliness expected from residents and businesses.

The Minister and the Mayor also picked up pieces of litter along the route, reinforcing their message that keeping Accra clean is not the responsibility of the government alone but a shared responsibility between authorities, businesses, traders and residents.
