At least fifteen candidates, eight of them females are absent in the ongoing Basic Education Certificate Examination in the Savelugu Municipality.

It is unclear why the boys are absent, however the girls are said to be pregnant, with one confirmed to have delivered a few weeks ago.

A teacher who spoke to Radio Ghana on condition of anonymity, said pregnancy among candidates in basic school examination in the municipality is high, adding that this year appears to have recorded the lowest figure compared to last year.

In an interaction with some pupils at the examination centers in the Municipality, they revealed, that some of their colleagues have left to work as porters or “kayaye” in Accra. Another absentee candidate is reported dead.

The Supervisor for the Savelugu Experimental JHS Center, Zubaida Mustapha confirmed, that one candidate from the Center has delivered.
