President John Dramani Mahama has disbursed a total of GH¢684,000 (about US$60,000) from the government’s Sports Development Fund to three Ghanaian clubs representing the country in continental and regional competitions.

Breakdown of support

  • Medeama SC (CAF Champions League): GH¢342,000 (US$30,000)
  • Nations FC (CAF Confederation Cup): GH¢228,000 (US$20,000)
  • Ampem Darkoa Ladies (WAFU B Women’s Champions League qualifiers): GH¢114,000 (US$10,000)

The cheques were presented at Jubilee House on Tuesday, 8 September, 2026 when the clubs paid a courtesy call on the President ahead of their continental assignments.

Mahama said the Sports Development Fund was set up to support national teams and Ghanaian clubs in African competitions, but acknowledged it is still in its early stages with limited resources. “As the Sports Development Fund grows, we will be able to give you bigger contributions when you go out to Africa,” he told the clubs.  He also called for private-sector co-investment to expand the pool.

While presenting the awards, Mahama stressed the need for greater investment in women’s football, noting that the women’s teams have often delivered more success despite receiving less support. “Last but certainly not least, perhaps I should have started with the women because they are doing better… Ampem Darkoa Ladies,” he said.

The support comes as Medeama prepare for their CAF Champions League second-leg tie against TP Mazembe in Lubumbashi, Nations FC gear up for their Confederation Cup return leg versus FC Diarra in Ghana, and Ampem Darkoa chase the WAFU B title and a CAF Women’s Champions League slot.
