Malawi’s outgoing President, Peter Mutharika, 78, is taking another shot at extending his political career tomorrow in an uncertain presidential election, where he will face an opposition leader and two members of his own government.

Questions over President Peter Mutharika’s fitness to run for another term has led to a split with his Vice-president, Saulos Chilima.

Mr. Chilima, quit the ruling party in 2018 and is aiming to defeat his boss.

Six point eight million voters of the poor and agricultural southern African country, which is highly dependent on international aid, will also elect their MPs and local councillors on the same day.

Peter Mutharika, who has been in power since 2014, is running for a second term against seven other candidates.

His presidency has been tarnished by corruption cases, despite his commitment to fighting this scourge.

Observers says the stakes are high partly because Malawi will for the first time use electronic transmission of results, which the people believe is an answer to eliminating election irregularities.
