Jose Mourinho walked out of a postmatch news conference after Monday’s 3-0 defeat to Tottenham while demanding more “respect” from the media and reminding reporters he has won more Premier League titles alone than the other 19 managers combined.
During a spiky confrontation that lasted just over seven minutes, Mourinho praised his players and the supporters after watching Tottenham inflict his heaviest home defeat as a manager and ensure United lost two of their first three Premier League games for the first time since 1992.
It ended with the Portuguese manager saying “respect” over and over again as he left the room.
“Do you know what was the result? 3-0. 3-0,” he said, holding up three fingers. “Do you know what this means? 3-0.
“But it also means three Premierships, and I won more Premierships alone than the other 19 managers together. Three for me and two for them. Respect, respect, respect …”
The only other active Premier League managers to win the title are Manchester City’s Pep Guardiola (last season) and West Ham’s Manuel Pellegrini, who won it with City in 2014. Mourinho won three over two stints with Chelsea.
After the final whistle, Mourinho stood in front of the Stretford End for more than a minute applauding the fans. He walked down down the tunnel with a scarf and a shirt that were thrown onto the pitch by fans.
“We were aggressive, we press high, Tottenham couldn’t make two passes coming from the back, we miss chances,” he said.
“We lost a game by conceding the first corner of the match. In the first half, zero free kicks, zero corners, and on minute 50 or something they have one corner and score a goal and with that goal you want to transform the story of the game.
“The best judge in football are the supporters. I’m really happy, humbled by the way the supporters reacted to the boys.
“I think it was very much deserved, but sometimes players deserve and don’t get what they deserve so we have to be humbled by the supporters.”
Mourinho was quick to point out that Tottenham were lucky to go in at half-time at 0-0 after Romelu Lukaku missed three good chances in the first 45 minutes.
Tottenham scored twice inside two minutes in the second half before Lucas Moura wrapped things up six minutes from time with his second goal of the evening.
“You want to make the miracle of my team played so well and strategically, we were so so good and you want to try and transform this,” Mourinho added. “You have to tell me what is the most important thing.
“When I win matches, I come here many times and you are not happy and you say the most important is the way of playing. I need to know what is the most important thing, if it is is to play well or win matches?
“I wouldn’t be worried if at half-time we were winning 3-0 and at half-time the result should be 3-0, 3-1 or 2-0 because we were so so much the better team in the first half.”
