Boxing Day is a secular holiday that is traditionally celebrated on December 26, the day after Christmas Day.

Boxing Day is marked in all British Common Wealth Countries around the world.

It is a Holiday, that is spent with family and friends to eat the leftovers of Christmas Day.

The origins of the day, however, are steeped in history and tradition. The name is a reference to holiday gifts.

It was traditionally a day for servants in Britain, when they receive Christmas Boxes containing various gifts from their masters to go and make merry with their families and loved ones.

The servants will also go home on Boxing Day to give ‘Christmas Boxes’ to their families.

History has it that it is also a reference to charity drives, where often people used a box to collect money for the poor traditionally and placed in Churches on Christmas day and opened the next day .

In Ghana, Boxing Day is a time to spend with families and friends, usually those not seen on Christmas Day.

In recent times, Boxing Day has become synonymous with many merry making and sporting activities.

As revellers go to the beaches to mark the Boxing Day, Management of the La Pleasure Beach Resort in Accra has assured the public that strong security measures have been put in place at the La Beach for a safe celebration during the festive season.

Deputy Head of Security at the La Beach, Eric Yemo Tetteh said Police and other private security operatives are on stand by to ensure that patrons have an incident-free Christmas.
He said sanitary conditions at the beach which were hitherto a challenge have improved.
