Medeama SC winger and Ghana U-20 captain Kelvin Nkrumah is close to completing a transfer to Portuguese giants FC Porto, in what could be one of the biggest deals involving a Ghana Premier League youngster this summer. The 18/19-year-old is expected to finalise the move after returning from the WAFU B U-20 Championship, where he is leading the Black Satellites.
Initial pathway through Porto’s youth ranks
Sources say Nkrumah will initially join Porto’s U-19 side as part of the club’s development route, with the aim of progressing to the B team and eventually the senior squad. This approach fits Porto’s model of integrating young African talents into their academy before testing them at higher levels.
Two strong seasons at Medeama
The move follows two impressive campaigns with Medeama, where Nkrumah made 57 appearances across the last two Ghana Premier League seasons. In the most recent season, he scored two goals in 30 league matches, but his composure, work rate, leadership and tactical intelligence drew more praise than his modest goal return.
Black Stars training invite shows his ceiling
His performances at club level also earned him an invitation to train with the senior Black Stars last season, underlining his growing reputation. Although he has not yet made his full international debut, his development path is seen as a strong platform for future national team involvement.
Another Ghanaian in the Porto pipeline
The deal continues Porto’s long-standing investment in emerging African talent, with the Portuguese club known for turning young players into elite professionals. If completed, Nkrumah will hope to follow in the footsteps of previous Ghanaian players who used Portugal as a stepping stone to top-level European careers.
