The decision  of the Electoral Commission (EC), to compile a wholly new  Voters’ Register has been met with opposition and  support in equal measure.

While  some opposition parties, including the  PNC, the  Eagle Party, the  NDC and the APC are seriously opposed to any idea to compile a new register, threatening mayhem if  the EC goes ahead with the decision, some  other  minority parties including the PPP, the CPP and  the LPG, among  others have joined the position of  the  NPP in support of  a new Voters’ register.

Speaking  to GBC Radio Ghana on this  rather  thorny  issue, the  Leader and Founder of the Liberal Party of Ghana, LPG , Kofi Akpaloo said his party is in support of the EC’s decision to compile a new register because to them, the  current voters register is not  fit for purpose.

Meanwhile, the Progressive People’s Party says the compilation of any new voters’ register without the utilisation of the National Identification System infrastructure is needless.

The party thinks such a procedure will be a waste of scarce resources.

In a statement in Accra, the party strongly urges the Electoral Commission to use the current Biometric Register for the 2020 general elections.

It however, adds that, if in future the EC sees it fit and necessary to compile a new voters’ register, it recommends that the register should be compiled from the National Identification System since that project has already started and it can be given the same presidential and parliamentary impetus to be completed within the same period that the EC would propose to use to compile a new voters’ register.

The PPP gave the assurance that it remains wide awake and rely on Ghanaians to save the Country from waste.
